5 Causes of Tooth Pain & Sensitivity

A common complaint we get at Country Club Dental is that our patients are experiencing tooth pain and sensitivity. Whether it be a sensitivity to extreme hot or cold, a sharp pain when chewing, or a general, dull sensitivity that comes and goes throughout the day, we want our patients to be educated on what the source could be and how you can manage tooth sensitivity.

Here are five common tooth pain causes:

1. Worn Enamel

The most prevalent cause of tooth sensitivity is the wearing down of the tooth’s protective outer layer—the enamel. Beneath the enamel is a sensitive tissue called dentin. When dentin is exposed it will result in tooth pain. Over your lifetime, some enamel erosion is to be expected. However, excessive consumption of acidic foods and beverages, smoking, and using a hard-bristled toothbrush can exacerbate erosion.

2. Gum Recession

Gum recession is often caused by bacterial decay that, if left untreated, progresses from gingivitis into periodontal disease. However, gum recession can also be caused by improper brushing technique, trauma to the gums, smoking, poor denture fit, or genetics. When the gum line recedes away from the crown (the exposed portion of the tooth), the root of the tooth becomes exposed, which usually results in sensitivity or pain.

3. Tooth Decay

According to the National Institute of Health, approximately 92% of adults between the ages of 20 to 64 have had dental caries (cavities) in their permanent teeth. Tooth decay occurs through a process called demineralization that happens on the tooth’s surface. This process is initiated when sugars in our food (be they healthy or unhealthy foods) react with the bacteria in our mouth. This reaction then produces an acidic environment and results in a breakdown, or decay, of the tooth enamel.

4. Chipped or Fractured Teeth

A minor chip of a tooth may cause no pain at all. However, if a chip or fracture is severe enough, it can expose the nerves of a tooth and be quite painful. Chips or cracks are often caused by hard foods, using your teeth as a tool to open or cut objects, or oral trauma.

5. Tooth Grinding

Tooth grinding, or bruxism, is typically a habit that occurs while we are sleeping and unable to correct the behavior. It is commonly caused by stress, anxiety and tension. If tooth grinding continues without receiving treatment, it can lead to enamel erosion and even broken teeth.
