What is Fluoride? Is it Good or Bad?

If you’ve been in any supermarket shopping for toothpaste, you’ve seen the term “fluoride.” But what is this mysterious chemical? In short, it’s a chemical that aids in rebuilding tooth enamel and eliminating bacteria. Does that mean you should consume as much as possible? Not exactly. At Country Club Dental in Flagstaff, we want to keep you informed about the best treatment for your teeth.

What Is Fluoride?

Fluoride is a chemical anion—a variation of fluorine, which you can find on the periodic table. It appears in natural minerals, as well as in water supplies throughout the US.

In the scientific world, it’s common knowledge that fluoride is best consumed in small amounts, as too much can be toxic. But drinking water and using toothpaste that contain the substance is safe in recommended amounts.

Role in Dental Treatment

Fluoride is found in most toothpastes and many mouthwashes because it helps your mouth stay healthy in the following ways:

  • It strengthens enamel that has broken down. Fluoride combines with calcium and phosphate in your saliva to create something called fluorapatite, which strengthens existing enamel and can help reverse tooth decay.
  • It prevents new cavities. Not only can it halt the growth of cavities that are already present, but it can significantly lower your risk of new ones.
  • It clears out harmful bacteria and cleanses your mouth. It’s like giving your mouth a clean slate!
  • It can even ease tooth sensitivity. Because it fights tooth decay, it can also ease tooth sensitivity

Consumption

Although toothpaste is the first product many people think of, fluoride can be used in various ways. Dentists recognize two categories:

  • Systemic. These refer to fluoride that is consumed—i.e., swallowed. Supplements are available, or you can consume the substance in water in most areas of the country.
  • Topical. Topical fluorides are applied directly to the teeth. This includes toothpaste or sealants, which are applied at a dentist’s office.

Ask us about sealants at your next appointment to help keep your smile healthy and fresh.

Fluoride Toxicity—What You Need to Know

As we stated earlier, while toxicity can occur, it’s only when fluoride is consumed in excessive quantities. Using fluoride toothpaste or drinking water in normal amounts cannot cause toxicity. Rest assured you and your teeth are safe.
