If you are getting dentures for the first time, you probably have a lot of questions, like: How are dentures applied? How much do they cost? Do they look natural? Are they uncomfortable? But there’s no need to worry, because at Country Club Dental, we are denture experts! We’re here to make sure you know what to expect when getting dentures for the first time.
What Are Dentures?
Also known as “false teeth,” dentures are generally made of acrylic resin. They are custom-made to look just like your real teeth. In addition, they are easily applied, easily removed, and easy to maintain.
Although they are made of synthetic materials, you can rest assured that proper dentures will not look artificial. That said, it is important to choose a skilled cosmetic dentist to provide you with high-quality, natural-looking dentures.
Why Do I Need Dentures?
Dentures are the right choice for people of all ages with various conditions, including:
Severe Tooth Decay
Tooth decay that is left untreated destroys the pulp of the teeth and leads to serious health issues. Such severely damaged teeth are cause for removal and dentures.
Acid Reflux
Patients with severe, chronic acid reflux often end up needing dentures. This is because the acid produced in the stomach damages teeth when regurgitated.
Bruxism
The clinical term for “teeth grinding,” bruxism is a harmful habit that eats away at your teeth. Severe teeth grinding can eventually necessitate dentures.
Ectodermal Dysplasia
Ectodermal dysplasia is a genetic deformation of certain parts of the body. When it affects the mouth, the teeth and jaw are shaped abnormally. Thankfully, though, dentures can fix this issue and, over time, reshape the jaw.
The Process of First-Time Dentures
The process of getting dentures is not difficult, but making sure you get the right ones for you may take some time. Here are the typical steps involved:
- Choosing the right set. There are a few different types of dentures to choose from. The first step is identifying which parts of your teeth need the dentures. You may need a full set, or you may need a partial set (i.e., just the top teeth).
- Impression forming. Your dentist takes an impression of your teeth and jaw shape. You’ll bite into a clay-like substance that will retain the shape of your mouth.
- Molding. Between appointments, your impression will be sent to a lab and your dentures will be made.
- Fitting. Your dentist will make sure the dentures fit in your mouth as expected, and then you’re all set!
Caring for Dentures
Making sure your dentures stay clean isn’t hard, but it is important. Follow these steps to care for your dentures:
- Use a denture cleaner. Be sure to get a special solution in which to soak your dentures.
- Brush them. They may be artificial, but they’re still your teeth! Treat them just as you would your natural teeth.
- Practice good overall oral hygiene. Regular professional cleanings and examinations are just as important when you have dentures.
