Most dentures are made of acrylic and need to be custom-fitted to each patient
They are typically made using one of two different methods:
- A conventional denture is made after all teeth have been extracted and the gums and tissues have healed
- An immediate denture is fabricated and inserted immediately after the teeth are extracted and the tissues are allowed to heal under the denture
- An upper denture has acrylic, usually flesh colored, that covers the palate, or roof of the mouth
- A lower denture is shaped like a horseshoe to leave room for the tongue
The teeth used in our office are made of plastic. That said, the need for dentures or partials doesn’t mean all of your teeth will need to be extracted first. At Country Club Dental we don’t remove healthy teeth or drill into to perfectly good enamel. Our custom-made dentures can be designed and built to fit over endodontically treated teeth. This means that you can keep your healthy teeth while removing the ones that are giving you a problem. Dentures are designed to improve your life and allow you to eat and speak normally without the discomfort of major surgery or other medical intervention. That said, there are a number of things you need to be aware of when getting dentures.
Over the course of time, dentures will wear and need to be replaced or relined in order to keep your jaw alignment normal. In addition, the bone and gum ridges in your mouth will shrink due to the extraction of your teeth. This is a normal part of the healing process as your mouth reduces the size of these areas and heals the gaps left by the absence of teeth. As this process changes the shape of your mouth, regular dental examinations will be required to make sure everything stays tight and fits properly. These regular appointments also serve to ensure the oral tissues can be checked over for disease or any other infections that may affect the healing process or your overall health.
