Types of Dental Emergencies

Extreme Pain or Toothache

Dental pain is one of the most common reasons we see emergency patients. A toothache is often a symptom of a dental cavity that can easily be treated with a simple filling. However, many people put off visiting the dentist when they are experiencing bearable pain. As a result of their delay, infection and decay often have time to spread—making them a candidate for root canal or extraction.

Facial Swelling

Swelling around the jaw, cheeks or gums can indicate that infection has set in. Abscesses are a common form of infection, where a buildup of pus forms inside the teeth or gums and results in inflammation and pain. Depending on the source of the swelling, treatment may include gum treatment, a root canal treatment or extraction.

Fractured or Broken Tooth

A fractured, chipped or broken tooth can result from biting down hard on a piece of food, excessive grinding, or oral trauma. Depending on the size of the chip or the degree of damage, treatment of the tooth may include a one-day treatment—such as a dental filling or bonding—or a multiple-visit treatment—such as or a dental cap or crown, dental veneers, or root canal therapy.

Lost Filling or Crown

A filling or crown may fall out due to improper application. However, sometimes fillings and crowns become loose because of underlying decay. In either case, this new exposure of your tooth will likely cause a bit of pain and sensitivity to hot and cold. If it’s a crown, we recommend saving it if possible and scheduling an appointment to see us as soon as you can.

Bleeding

Bleeding in the mouth can result for a variety of reasons. Bleeding gums are often a sign of inflammation and gum disease. Although this is not an emergency, we do recommend you schedule a dentist appointment if your teeth regularly bleed during brushing and flossing. Bleeding may also result from dental trauma or a laceration. If bleeding persists or is accompanied by a wound or pain, please come in and see us as soon as possible.
