Is Teeth Whitening Safe?

There are a number of reasons why we may not feel confident about flashing our smile, and staining or discoloration of the teeth could be one of them. If you feel this way, you’re not alone: millions of Americans whiten their teeth every year in an effort to brighten their pearly whites and boost their confidence. At Country Club Dental, serving Flagstaff, AZ, we also know that if you’re considering teeth whitening, you may have some concerns about whether or not the process is safe. That’s why we want to reassure you that we use the newest techniques available in cosmetic dentistry, and those procedures are completely safe.

What Causes Tooth Discoloration?

That unfortunate yellowish hue to your teeth occurs through extrinsic or intrinsic stains that appear on top of, or within the enamel. Enamel is the hard substance on the outer surface of your teeth. It serves as a protective barrier for your teeth and also helps give them their sparkly appearance. Over time, however, extrinsic stains can occur on top of the enamel due to poor oral hygiene, the regular use of tobacco, or drinking dark-colored beverages like coffee, black tea, soda, or wine. Intrinsic stains happen for several reasons. They can occur when microscopic cracks appear in the enamel, allowing stains to form along the cracks. Or, if your tooth enamel begins to erode, the off-white dentin underneath can become visible, resulting in a change of the color of your smile. Fortunately, in most cases, both of these kinds of stains respond well to professional teeth whitening!

The Sinsational Smile® Whitening Method

At Country Club Dental, when you schedule your teeth whitening appointment, one of our clinically trained team members, will apply an eco-friendly method called Sinsational Smile®. She’ll insert a prefilled BPA-free silicone tray that comfortably conforms to the shape of your mouth, and then apply an LED accelerating light, which activates the gel’s whitening ingredients at a faster rate. The gel is gentle and will not cause tooth sensitivity or negatively impact the gums or teeth, or any dental work in your mouth. How does it work? On a scientific level, when the oxygen molecules from the whitening agent react, they form a bond with the discolored molecules, lifting them from the tooth.
