At Country Club Dental, we recommend scheduling your toddler’s first visit right around their third birthday, as all of their baby teeth should have grown in by then. However, don’t be afraid to schedule an appointment sooner if you have any concerns about your child’s teeth or if there’s a dental emergency, like a knocked-out baby tooth.
Here’s what to expect at their first appointment.
Your toddler’s very first appointment will typically be short. Just a quick cleaning, a visual exam, and maybe a fluoride application. If your child seems frightened on their own, you can sit in the chair and hold them on your lap.
During the exam, we’ll look for signs of decay and any adverse effects from thumb sucking. We might also take dental x-rays to check for signs of decay and monitor the progress of their developing teeth.
Before you leave, we’ll go over how to best clean and care for your child’s teeth at home to prevent cavities. Please don’t hesitate to ask us any questions you may have about cavities, sugar, and helping kids establish good brushing habits.
How to help your child get ready for their first dental visit.
The best way to prepare your preschooler for their first trip to the dentist is to bring them along to your next dental appointment. That way they can experience the office and watch what happens during a visit.
Afterward, you can play pretend and act out what happens during a dental visit using a stuffed animal or doll. Let your child play the role of the dentist as you teach them the steps of an exam and cleaning.
There might even be an episode of your child’s favorite show that walks them through the experience, which you can often find on YouTube. Daniel Gets His Teeth Cleaned from the show Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood is always a popular choice. You can also take your child to the bookstore and let them pick a book about the dentist to read together.
The more comfortable your child is with the idea of going to the dentist, the easier it will be to prevent anxiety and enjoy a smooth, stress-free checkup every time.
