When Is a Dental Bridge Necessary?

If you’re missing one tooth or several teeth next to each other, then your dentist may recommend a dental bridge as a tooth replacement. But when is a dental bridge necessary? What happens if you don’t get a dental bridge? The fact is, missing teeth can cause a variety of problems that only worsen with time, and a dental bridge can help prevent them—here’s how.

What Is a Dental Bridge?

A dental bridge is a type of restoration that can replace one or more missing teeth, as long as they are next to each other.

Also known as a fixed bridge, a dental bridge is permanently anchored to the teeth on either side of the gap with dental crowns. A false tooth called a pontic is attached to the crowns and fills the gap to restore the function of your teeth.

Your dental bridge will be colored to match the shade of your other teeth, giving you a beautiful, natural-looking smile.

When Is a Dental Bridge Necessary?

When you’re missing a tooth, some sort of replacement is necessary to prevent your other teeth from shifting to fill the space. Shifting teeth can affect your bite alignment, alter your facial structure, and make the surrounding teeth more vulnerable to decay

If you aren’t eligible for dental implants, a bridge is another great option for restoring the full function of your teeth. Missing teeth make it challenging to bite and chew certain foods, and can even affect your speech. A dental bridge will help you eat normally and speak clearly again.

What Happens If You Don’t Get a Dental Bridge?

If you don’t get a dental bridge when you need one, issues like shifting teeth will only get worse over time. If your dentist recommends you replace teeth with a dental bridge, it’s best to have it done sooner rather than later.

The gap can lead to a sunken appearance in your cheeks, making you appear older. Bite problems caused by missing teeth can affect how you eat and speak. And leaving the surfaces of the teeth on either side of the gap exposed only increases your risk of tooth decay and gum disease

Who Can Get a Dental Bridge?

In order to be eligible for a dental bridge, you must:

  • Have one missing tooth or multiple missing teeth in a row.
  • Have healthy teeth on either side of the gap, as decayed or damaged teeth may not be suitable for the crowns necessary to support the dental bridge.
  • Practice good oral hygiene—regularly cleaning your dental bridge is crucial to make it last longer and keep your mouth healthy.
