What is a dental emergency?
Many times people are unsure if their condition qualifies as a "dental emergency." Sometimes this uncertainty will make them hesitate, and they’ll wait until the pain is unbearable before they call a dentist. Here are some of the most common dental emergencies we see at Country Club Dental and how to recognize them.
Unexplained Pain
When a tooth hurts, this is your body's way of telling you that something is wrong. If you suddenly have an unexplained tooth or mouth pain, make sure to call us immediately for a thorough examination.
Bleeding Gums
Sometimes your gums may bleed slightly when brushing or flossing. In that situation, it is not considered a dental emergency. However, if your gums are bleeding heavily, do not stop bleeding, and have also become very swollen and painful, then it is a dental emergency.
Dental Abscess
A dental abscess occurs when a pocket of pus forms around a tooth or in the gums due to a bacterial infection. An abscess can cause a lot of pain and will make your mouth sensitive to hot and cold foods. If left untreated, the infection can affect your entire body, causing you to feel unwell, have a fever, and even have trouble swallowing. If you believe you have a dental abscess, call us immediately.
Lost, Cracked, or Broken Tooth
Accidents happen, and sometimes the result is a knocked-out or broken tooth. With a lost tooth, if you act quickly, we may be able to save your tooth! Carefully pick up the tooth—try not to touch the roots—and gently rinse it off. If you can, reinsert the tooth into your mouth and keep it in place with your fingers until you get to our office. If not, place the tooth in a jar or small plastic bag of milk—not tap water—and bring it to your emergency appointment.
Depending on the damage, sometimes a broken tooth can be fixed. Broken teeth are fragile and susceptible to further damage, infection, or falling out. If your tooth breaks, it's important to come in right away to see the dentist to have it treated.
Lost Fillings and Broken Crowns
Sometimes you may bite down too hard on a piece of food, causing a dental filling to fall out or a dental crown to break. Missing fillings and cracked crowns expose your teeth to infections and other damage. Make sure to call us immediately if you have any issues with your crowns or fillings.
