What Is That Thing? A Guide to Common Dental Tools

Sometimes seeing the line of tools on the tray at your dentist can be intimidating. It might even make you feel a little nervous. We understand how you feel, and so we want to explain how each different type of tool works and relieve some of that anxiety. Each tool a dentist uses plays an important role in caring for your oral health. Let’s go over their basic functions.

What Are the Tools a Dentist Uses?

Each tool on the exam tray has a necessary function. There are specialized tools for each type of procedure, but for this quick guide, we picked six tools that you would most likely see during a routine visit. But any time you’re in our office, if you have a question about one of the tools your dentist is using, feel free to ask!

Six Common Dental Tools

1: Mirrors

Dentists use small, rounded mirrors mounted on the end of a stick to direct more light into the mouth so that it’s easier to see the teeth in the back. Your dentist might also use the mirror to gently move your lips, tongue, and cheeks.

2: Explorers

These are pointed, pick-like tools that come in a variety of shapes. These are used to check for decay, cavities, tartar, gum recession, and other abnormalities. Some explorer tools, like a periodontal probe, have specific functions. For example, the perio probe has marks that can be used to measure parts of the teeth or gums.

3: Scalers

This sickle-shaped tool can come in several different sizes. It is used for scraping off debris, plaque, and tartar from the surfaces of the teeth. It also helps your dentist or hygienist see the surface of the tooth more clearly, so they can check for decay or damaged tooth enamel.

4: Cotton Forceps

This tool looks like an extra-long, angled-tipped pair of tweezers. It is used for moving materials like gauze into and out of the mouth.

5: Suction Device

These devices that look like straws are used to remove saliva and small debris. They are attached to a machine that acts as a vacuum and sucks all the spit and toothpaste out of your mouth during a dental cleaning.

6: Spin Brush

Known to dentists as a “prophy angle brush,” this tool is a lot like a small electric toothbrush. It cleans and polishes your teeth, giving them that sparkly white shine.
