Removable dentures require a different type of care than implanted dentures. While you can treat implanted dentures the same way you would your natural teeth, doing so with a removable denture could cause them damage.
Caring for your dentures will eliminate stains, bad smells, and bacteria buildup. It will also make them last longer! With proper care, removable dentures should last at least ten years.
How to Care for Removable Dentures
Brushing and soaking your dentures every night will help you keep them clean and free from bacteria.
To avoid scratching your dentures, use a soft-bristled toothbrush and denture-friendly toothpaste. Many toothpastes have abrasive additives that could harm removable dentures.
An overnight soak in water with a denture solution will keep them from drying out. If your dentures dry out they may become warped and brittle, and they might even break.
More Denture Care Tips
Avoid Whitening Strips or Harsh Cleansers
Most whitening agents are ineffective on the material used to make dentures and can even damage them. And using any harsh chemicals or cleaners could warp, degrade, or scratch your dentures.
No Hot Water!
Water that is too hot can also warp your dentures. This can change the fit, which can lead to sores in your mouth, as well as difficulty speaking and eating.
Handle with Care
When taking your dentures in and out of your mouth, be sure to handle them carefully. Dropping them from a great height or falling on the hard marble of a sink can damage them. Fill the sink with water or spread a towel on the counter to prevent accidental damage.
Watch What You Eat
Crunching on ice, popcorn kernels, nuts, and other hard foods can chip or scratch removable dentures. And some drinks, like black coffee or red wine, can stain them. By being careful to avoid certain foods, you can keep your dentures looking new.
Visit Your Dentist
Twice-yearly dental checkups will also help extend the life of your dentures. Your dentist will help you keep your gums healthy and check on the fit of your dentures.
